Mother Hen, Baby Chick
Compared to a human, Baby Chick's task of getting hatched is a piece of cake! The process is short, it is simple, and it comes with a doting Mother Hen. The basics of how life begins for Baby Chick… The mother hen-to-be begins the reproduction process by choosing a secluded and safe area for her nest. Each day, she will go and lay an egg, adding one more to the batch that will end up being only as many as her feathers will cover. The key is body warmth! When the hen is satisfied with her stack of eggs she's accumulated, she begins her rather short journey of a 'Labor in Love'; i.e. nesting. The hen will continue to heat her eggs with her body warmth for about twenty to twenty-one days.
The Brood
When the baby chicks are hatched their bodies are covered in fluffy fuzz known as down feathers. Some chicks are yellow while others may be a white hue. This is dependent on the species of the chick. From the first day of life the chicks are strong enough to follow their mama and scratch for their own feed. Imagine that! Oh the joys of Chicken Motherhood!
