Famous Dogs Immortalized in History Check out some of the more famous 'Man's Best Friends'. It gives new meaning to the phrase, Every dog has its day. Dogs love a good master through thick and thin. A dog doesn't care if its master is rich, or poor, lame, or whole. A dog sounds a lot like….a best friend, doesn't it? Here are a few of the more famous Man's Best Friends lodged in the pages of history. Saur, or Suening This dog was king. Literally – for three years! During the 11th century A.D. a Norwegian king was angry with his subjects who had once disposed him. He used Saur as a keen act of humiliating revenge and demanded that the dog receive the royal treatment. Rin Tin Tin Rinty was an all-time favorite canine star who would be featured in 19 movies before his death in 1932. That is more movies than some human superstars have made! This German Shepherd was smart, fearless, and could generally out-act his co-stars. Lassie Classic Lassie, an easy-going collie that didn't get angry even when he was called a girl. Lassie relentlessly rescued Little Timmy week after week, always in the nick of time (right after the Alka-Seltzer commercial)! Her courage was only surpassed by her popularity. No one could 'wolf' like Lassie! Laika Laika was the first dog in space aboard the Russian satellite Sputnik 2 in 1957. Look out Tang! (Or…was that Fang?) Le Diable The name is French, the dog was notorious! This bombshell was an innocent pawn that was used to smuggle lace and other costly items across the French border. Its owners dyed Le Diable's skin various colors in order to baffle customs guards. Soter Soter was a watchdog in ancient Greece and one of only fifty that survived attack by invaders. Soter ran to the gates of Corinth to warn the citizens, saving many lives. Soter was a true canine hero who didn't need his nose powdered, or the assistance of a good director, to get the job done.
