Toss Out the Old, Bring in the New The importance of emptying uneaten food from your pet's food bowl. An interactive, educational pet article that allows you to pick the correct answer! Dick has a bowl of chili for lunch but must suddenly rush away to an almost forgotten appointment. In haste, the half-eaten bowl is placed on the countertop to be dealt with later that afternoon when time is more kind… Four hours pass and with the appointment out of the way, Dick returns home and is greeted by his friendly Golden Retriever, Peppy. After a few affectionate pets, he goes into the kitchen and sees the leftover chili from earlier that afternoon. Dick eyes the chili but doesn’t consider eating it, even though he’s famished. Why? a) Because Dick knows there is a danger of getting an uncomfortable case of food poisoning due to the growth of bacteria growing in the food. OR b) Dick doesn’t consider eating the chili because his tastebuds are suddenly craving pizza. Peppy trots happily into the kitchen and lets Dick know that he’s very, very hungry. Dick eyes the bowl of ‘aged’ chili but does not consider giving it to Peppy. Why? a) Because Dick is saving the chili for himself. He plans to make a peachy-king corn chip pie with the leftovers tomorrow. OR b) Because Dick knows that the leftover chili presents the same dangers to Peppy as it does to him. From this ‘heart-winning’ story of Dick and Peppy, we can learn much! By now you’ve discovered that food that is improperly stored contains harmful bacteria. The Golden Retriever Leftover Rules of ‘Thumbs’ Always make it a practice to remove any leftover food from your pet’s bowl, cage or tank. When your pet drinks from their water bowl, bits of food fall into the clean water from your pet’s mouth. Your pet’s water should be changed daily to avoid contamination. Never feed your pet any leftovers that you wouldn’t eat yourself. Click Here to Return to Blossom Possum's Pet Tips Click Here to Return to House of Hen Click Here to Return to American Outback |
