Save Money on Pet Expenses

If you're a pet owner you are aware that expenses can multiply swiftly. Read on for a few tips that might leave you with a little extra money that will take you and fluffy on a mini vacation.

Are you looking for ways to cut pet expenses?  Try these on for size!

Clip coupons from your Sunday paper.  Coupons, especially when taken to a store that will double or even triple them, can save you money on dog food, cat food and produce that your pet may require as part of its healthy diet.

Visit your local feed store.  You can find all sorts of pet goodies here; quality items for less!  Many pet food items can be purchased loose in feed bends, or by bulk – saving you even more money.  A feed store also carries some unique items that you won’t find in a grocery market.

Small pet shops offer many items at a decreased cost to ‘up’ the competition with the ‘big-chain’ pet stores.  You can usually scoop up big savings on birdseed.

Check into local thrift and resale stores.  My recent purchase at a local thrift store was a brand new pet carrier which normally retails for $50 plus tax.  I walked away with an ‘almost steal’ for $5.00 plus tax!

Frequent yard, garage, estate and auction sales.  Talk about deals!

Investigate the national clubs, like Sam’s.  Again, bulk is cheaper.

Another good rule of thumb is to keep an eye out for pet sales, such as occur at your local Target, Big-K, and Wal-Mart stores.  If there is a big sale on a non-food item, pick up a few of that item to save money in the future.  Odds are, the price will increase with time.

Avoid purchasing pet food, unless it is canned, if you’re not going to use it within the near future.  Pet food goes stale, just like human food.
