Pet Tips & Remedies This article addresses some of the most common problems encountered by pet owners and offers some helpful ‘home-grown’ tips and remedies that won’t cost you a fortune! Fish Avoid using soap when cleaning your fishbowl. Soap can kill your fish. Kitty Fur Balls If your kitty sounds like he’s trying to cough up a steam engine, try placing a bit of petroleum jelly on his nose. Once licked, the jelly turns into mineral oil and helps prevent fur balls from forming inside of kitty. Take care to use only a very small amount. Odors Pine oil, baking soda and vinegar are very effective odor eaters. Begin by mixing one of these ingredients with water, then clean and rinse. A slight fresh scent will linger that shouldn’t be offensive to your pet. Use oil, soda and vinegar very sparingly. Kennels can be kept clean and fresh by using a bit of pine oil combined with water. Again, a little will go a very long way. Pine straw or cedar chips are a comfortable cushion for some pets and very odor absorbent. An uncovered dish of vinegar will absorb unpleasant odors. Just make sure that the dish is out of the reach of your pet. One cup of baking soda added to kitty litter will help keep kitty’s treasure box fresh. Borax also works well; use one part to six parts of litter. Sad Puppy A ticking clock in a puppy’s box works wonders in quieting him. Also, place a pair of your worn socks in his bed for added security. Skunk Remedy Tomato juice is powerful tool in removing skunk odor from any victim of skunk spray. Additional information regarding toxicity and pets can be obtained by contacting the ASPCA National Animal Poison Control Center (NAPCC) at 800-548-2423.
