The days grow shorter and much colder as winter wraps its chilling hand about us. Amid the snow, chaffing winds and sometimes blinding sun it's difficult to become travel-motivated. In fact, what you may need is a weekend break from the dull thud of home… Yet, at times between warm cups of cocoa, crackling fires and endless sessions of prime time television, one can begin to feel trapped and controlled. That eerie feeling signals a need for freedom, a time for migrating outdoors regardless of the harshness of climate.
At times, the winter fortress is so bitter that one feels hard pressed in locating a functional, yet adventurous stretch of outdoors. They do exist beyond the minds of the envisioned traveler. So, where can one find adventure in this great land? Plenty of places! Paradise may be as close as the neighboring large city. Rent a hotel and see the sites there. Or, if you're intent on keeping things outdoors then tour local gardens, river walks and historic forts that are in your area. Dust off the old tent and head for a state park. There's nothing quite as nice as a flickering campfire on a cold wintry night. Enjoy a long hike while you are visiting the park. You'll see so many different things during this time of the year that won't be there come spring, particularly wildlife. During the day, seek out migratory birds. If there is a landmark close by that you have been wanting to visit, now is the time! Enjoy a nice meal amid your journey. Don't forget to check out unique shops along the way that offer tantalising goodies such as fudge, ethnic foods and good old fashioned bar-b-que. If you're a fisherman, try testing the waters. Bundle up and try to choose a calm day. Enjoy a canoe ride. The hotter times of year intensify the heat one feels when canoeing. Winter and fall present great opportunities for exploring the waters. Again, you'll be fascinated with the winter wildlife, and the oaring will help keep you nice and toasty warm. Whatever you choose to do, a weekend away from the mundane can do wonders to recharge your life, to relax you so that you can er…relax. Enjoy that cocoa and warm fireplace - summer is just around the corner! Click Here to Return to American Outback |
