Have Restaurant Will TravelCan we stop now?
You're on a long trip to glory and it's time to drift into a restaurant. Oh? What have we here? Such a cute, innocent looking Mexican restaurant… The importance of using definitive thinking when choosing 'the' restaurant. Twelve 'must do' tips. My, my, my – that Mexican restaurant was a disappointment. Something just didn't smell right in the establishment, and the refried beans looked as though they had suffered from heat lamp exhaustion. A little crusty. Oh well, what's done is done. Next dining stop, Italian.
Three hours later, 'the fam' unloads at a tiny filling station along the freeway, all four fighting to be the first to visit the uni-restroom. What's almost as bad, the tiny store doesn't stock the pink stuff, or the clear stuff – only the chocolate stuff, and you sure don't need that! Twelve Great Tips for Choosing that Special Place to Dine Housekeeping 1. Circle the building and take a look at the Dumpster. Is it flooded with garbage that is spilling over onto the pavement? Give the parking lot a good once-over as well. 2. As you enter the restaurant, observe the dining area, and if the kitchen area is exposed, glance there too. Is food on the floor? On the table or seats? Did you slide down the isle as you made it towards your table? 3. If you visit the restroom, is it tidy? Employees 4. If you saw an employee in the restroom, did they wash their hands before leaving, or did they just brush them across their bloody apron? 5. Listen. Are any of the employees, especially cooks, coughing or sneezing or sniffling? 6. Are they scratching anything? 7. Do their hands, nails, and hair appear clean or do they look like they just dug a water well? 8. Are the cooks using hats and plastic gloves even when they aren't handling the hot sauce? Do any of them have a cigar with a two-inch ash casually hanging off their lips? Dinnerware 9. Is the silverware spotless? Plates? Cups, water glass, and so forth? Test by running your clean hand over the object. If it feels like coarse sandpaper, rise and walk. The Food 10. When you order, ask the waitress when the food was prepared. 11. When it arrives, is it the correct temperature? Beans should be hot; egg salad should be cool, etc. As a note, if your egg salad is hot, don't attempt to eat the little yellow wad. 12. Some people are sensitive to a change in water. If this applies to you, choose your beverage wisely. As a rule, those out of the way spots can be just as wonderful as the well-known ones. Many times they are cleaner and offer impeccable service. An added plus is the experience of the unique atmosphere. But just in case, you may want to pack some backup. |
