WICHITA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Northwest of Lawton, Oklahoma View Photos of Wichita Mountains NWR Nestled in the foothills of the Wichita Mountains lies a diverse terrain that harbors multiple species of wildlife indigenous to Oklahoma. This little-known alcove is known as the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge. Everyone should have the privilege to experience firsthand the spectacular autumn colors of the dense mountain foliage located in these beautiful hump-backed mountains!
The National Refuge is a nature adventure through primitive wilderness trails and offers a myriad of photographic opportunities for the nature photo enthusiast. The Refuge is sanctuary to elk, buffalo, possums, raccoons, foxes, longhorn cattle, birds and waterfowl, and snakes. There is a prairie dog town where one can closely study the habitats of these furry, sometimes funny - but always amusing characters. Some will actually beg for food from those early morning visitors. There are several hiking trails that ribbon throughout the area including a wetland area, several tiny caves, a breathtaking canyon and big blue lakes. Seasonal sightings include water lilies, fields of prolific wildflowers and of course, those vivid autumn colors. Adjacent to the Refuge is Medicine Park, a small village crafted by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) from cobblestones. This unique oddity is a definite 'must-see'. While you're there you may want to test out the 'Indian Tacos' which are a popular faire among the villagers there. The Refuge remains clothed in regal beauty regardless of the season, so if you're planning to visit the area then drop by and get a glimpse of the magic that never leaves these beautiful mountains!
