The Wooden Indian
Beavers Bend
State Park, Oklahoma
Located
in the foothills of the Kiamichi Mountains

The
Wooden Indian located at Visitor's Center
Beaver's
Bend Resort Park is one of Oklahoma's true gems. Crystal
clear waters, dappling rapids, plentiful wildlife
- all encased in a tapestry of greenery meets the weary traveler's
eyes in this pristine, pine-laden wilderness. It's definitely
worth the drive!
The
visitor's center is filled with fascinating data and provides
an inside glimpse of what you might expect to find within the
park grounds.
Don't
miss the hands-on nature center during your visit. Try
to go early in the morning and take a few minutes to enjoy the
scenery surrounding the center that overlooks a small valley.
In summertime, you'll marvel at the hummingbirds that
come to feed along the backside of the center.
Adjacent
to the nature center are pens that hold injured, unreleasable
wildlife. During our visit we got to see a recovering
owl, and even though he'd seen better days, he was still magnificent.
A year-round naturalist is on hand for any questions you
may have.
A
tiny convenience store also rests inside the park, and it is
packed with everything you might have need of during your camping
excursion - from marshmallows to franks. The prices are
very reasonable for a state facility.
Riverview
cabins are available, lining the banks of the Mountain Fork
River, or if you're wanting to go primitive, hit the trails
and try a bit of camping in the rough. The woods are beautiful,
filled with majestic wildlife. We were lucky enough to
have a couple of deer visit us for breakfast during our stay.
Golfing,
fishing, hiking, biking, tenting, backpacking, rock hounding,
swimming, canoeing, running the rapids - you won't run
out of fun things to do in this great resort park!

Trails
are abundant throughout the park for the adventurous hiker,
lined with dogwood and pine. The one above leads you past
the Mountain Fork River and is quite breathtaking. The
water is ice cold, even in the heat of summer, and feels like
a touch of heaven on those tired aching feet.
Around
the Beaver's Bend area are tiny rock shops that you may enjoy
visiting. The Hochatown State Park is only a stone's throw
down the road and is definitely worth stopping to enjoy. The
drive leads you through a trail of pines and the park is loaded
with chunks of beautiful ornate quartz. A picnic overlooking
the lake is a highly recommended 'must do'.

Bend Resort Park is 222 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth, 248 miles
