HIKING - HIKERS OR
BIKERS? - Articles
& Great Hiking Tips
Recently, I almost had a need
to change my middle name to Pancake. It was a cool spring day and
Tom and I were innocently hiking along the skirts of a Texas river
when out of the Wild Blue Yonder, a biker appeared from nowhere
on the trail, pulling at least three g's.
Instinct kicked in and I barely
manage to hop out of the way, nearly spiraling down the riverbank
in the process, and taking Tom with me.
A hiking-biking trail is one
of the more dangerous trails to tackle. Bikers feel like they own
the trail while hikers feel the same. And the hikers are at the
greatest disadvantage because they don't have a 'weapon'.
This type of trail should be
avoided when small kids and pets are along for the hike.
And whether
you're the biker or the hiker, always exhibit the Outdoor Code of
Courtesy (OC-OC) because when you leave the area, you may find that
you're driving the Geo and the hiker that you almost plastered is
driving the Humvee.
