HIKING WITH KIDS - Out in the Wild with the wild....When hiking with the wild bunch, much supervision is required. Keep in mind that you, as the grown-up hiker, will reap little, if any benefit from your hike as you will need to keep all four eyes (those in the front AND in the back of your head) on the little monsters....wait - I mean, angels. Kids are naturally curious. If you tell one NOT to touch something, odds are, they will. (I did and I was a perfect child according to my grandmother, that is...). Especially if it's green with three leaves and has berries. They were also born to run and explore.
Some kids are fearless while others cry over swooping butterflies. Keeping these things in mind, kids: Hiking and kids can definitely be a fantastic mix and the two combined can equal an adventure that the kid will probably never forget. There's no need to put them in a straightjacket and wheel them through the Halls of Nature in a cart but do keep in mind that kids, particularly small kids, would choose the toy store at the mall over a hike in the woods. It ain’t called civilization for nothin'.... |
