Camping Recipe for Indian Fry Bread

This is an ancient recipe from the personal cookbook of my great, great grandmother and it has always been a family favorite. What we love about this recipe is that it's easily transportable for camp cooks, takes only minutes to prepare and it's so delicious. We recommend mixing the dry ingredients before hitting the camp trail. Pour into a zipper-lock bag. Once you reach camp and are ready to prepare the Indian Fry Bread, simply add water to the bag. Add just enough water to create a loose dough, then carefully drop into hot oil using a large spoon.

To make Indian Fry Pancakes, add less water and knead the dough for about 3 to 5 minutes. Flatten by hand or use a rolling pin. These can be cooked on the campfire in a skillet using a bit of oil. A can of drained Mexicorn plus a Tablespoon of ground chili powder can also be used to create Indian Fry Bread with a kick.

With using any of the above recipes, cook the Indian Fry Bread until it is golden brown and crisp on the outside. Honey and butter make excellent camp buddies for our Indian Fry Bread.

Dry Ingredients for Basic Indian Fry Bread

2 cups of all-purpose flour

1 - 2 teaspoons of salt (depending upon how salty you enjoy your bread)

1 tablespoon of baking powder

Will kindly feed about 6 - 8 really, really hungry campers.
