Mabel & Ottis
Three dead fish lay stinking
on the east back of the river and it was all Ottis' fault. Mabel pondered
the incident with a torched mind, wondering how someone as lovely as her own
self had ended up with a worm like Ottis.
She had been a cheerleader in
her younger days, about 50 or so years ago. That's about the time that
she had the misfortune of meeting Ottis who certainly was NOT her better half!
But he had been an entirely different person back then - captain of the
Dodgeball team. Mabel's lips twitched with amusement as she remembered
how sexy he looked in that black and white checkered team uniform.
But that was then. Today,
he had killed three fish with his pungent body odor. They had been camping
for 2 weeks now and she had tossed him out of the tent last night, giving him
the ultimatum of either sleeping for the next seven days of their vacation out
under the stars OR take a bath. She hadn't meant him to take a bath in
the stream!
Poor fish...never had a chance.
Too bad they weren't camping out in the Amazon where schools of man-eating
fish were prevalent. They would snap up a heathen like Ottis in a flash!
Well, at least the nice walk
through the woods had calmed her down a bit. So much to see in the woods
if one looked carefully. Mabel always saw so much more than most; she
saw more than a bird on a branch; she saw the worm in its beak. She saw
more than just leaves on that dressed the trees; she saw them dance in the light
of the sun filtering through the woods - sticking its golden finger through
a grove of oaks or tall pines.
Mabel's hike was a bit further
than she'd planned, but she'd been pretty mad at Ottis. Worm. Fish
killer. As she made her way towards the camp, the scent of the campfire hit
her nostrils - hickory wood. My, she loved the scent of burning hickory
wood. But there was something else, something so - so poultry about the
scent.
Squinting
her eyes through the campsite, she saw supper spinning. Oh my. Ottis
knew how much she loved roasted turkey. She glanced at him and he flashed
a clean smile back to her and in an instant, all was forgiven.
The rest of the vacation was
as marvelous as those first few days when Mabel had first met Ottis....
CAMPING TIPS
Always make use of the facilities at your campground
rather than bathing in the wild, as well as performing other bathroom activities
in the Wild. Soap,
detergents and 'natural agents' work well in polluting natural water sources
which in turn effect wildlife & habitat. Don't be the next victim
to catch a fish who has an unidentifiable brown object clenched in its lips. 'It' happens.
If Mother Nature puts in an unexpected call,
dig a hole at least 6 inches deep then bury your treasure well. Be sure
that you are at least 100 yards away from the nearest water source and of course,
curious onlookers.
