How Long Does Litter Linger?

Because you are reading this article, the odds are high that you care about keeping our beautiful world as pristine as possible. You know that litter not only makes the land and water look ugly, you also know that litter can harm or kill wild animals while polluting our land and water sources.

So, how long does litter linger? It requires the following length of time for these common litter items to vanish:

- Aluminum Cans & Tabs: 80-100 years

- Cigarette Butts: 1-5 years

- Glass Bottles: 1 million years or more!woods, hiking, camping

- Nylon Fabrics: 30-40 years

- Orange Peels, Banana Peels, Grapefruit Peels, Lemon Peels, Lime Peels: up to 2 years

- Plastic 6-pack Holders: 100 years

- Plastic Bags: 10-20 years

- Plastic Bottles: Indefinitely, depending upon the available sunlight and location of litter.

- Tin Cans: 50 years

Many areas offer litter bags for hikers and campers who are serious about keeping our recreational areas clean and unpolluted.
