SCARY
CAMPFIRE STORY, continued
The
day had also been rather warm for May, but as soon as
the sun set, the temperature cooled down quickly.
Gary
blew out the lantern that Jim had hung on a hook in
the giant oak that shadowed over the tent. Jim let the
way into the tent with the small beam from the cheap
flashlight. As soon as they secured the flaps,
the weak light fizzled out and they had to find their
way into their sleeping bags by the light of the quarter
moon sneaking into the tent from high overhead.
As soon
as Jim slipped into his sleeping bag, he knew something
wasn't right. There was movement, then he felt something
scrape the side of his leg. He went to pull himself
out, then heard a rattle - a loud rattle.
"Oh
my God, Jim! There's a snake in the tent!"
Gary whipped out, concern laced in his deep voice.
When
Jim didn't answer, Gary knew the worst. The snake
was in Jim's sleeping bag...
Three hours and five
park rangers later, Jim made it safely out of the tent.
He learned a lot from this experience, but mostly,
that he wasn't so afraid of bears anymore.
